Discharge
For most people, all debts will be discharged. This is because the most common type of debt--credit card debt--is generally dischargeable. If a debt is discharged, it is canceled, and you are not legally responsible for it.
Some less common types of debt, such as recent taxes, student loans, alimony and child support, and damages for intentional or fraudulent harm, are not dischargeable. If a debt is not dischargeable (nondischargeable) you still have to pay it--even if you have received a discharge in your bankruptcy case that wiped out other debts. Of course, after the dischargeable debts are wiped out in bankruptcy, it will be easier to pay down nondischargeable debts, if there are any.
